What is CIN? Corporate Identification Number Explained
Everything you need to know about CIN — what it means, how it is issued, how to decode it, and how to verify any Indian company's CIN instantly.
What is CIN?
CIN (Corporate Identification Number) is a 21-character alphanumeric unique identifier assigned by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to every company incorporated in India under the Companies Act, 2013 (or earlier acts). It is printed on the Certificate of Incorporation and must appear on all official company documents, letterheads, invoices, and regulatory filings.
CIN is used by the MCA, ROC (Registrar of Companies), banks, investors, and compliance professionals to uniquely identify and track a company across all government databases.

How is a CIN Issued / Created?
File SPICe+ Form on MCA21
The promoters submit the company incorporation application (SPICe+ form) on the MCA21 portal along with required documents like MOA, AOA, and identity proofs.
ROC Reviews the Application
The Registrar of Companies (ROC) of the respective state reviews the application, verifies documents, and approves the company name.
Certificate of Incorporation Issued
Upon approval, the MCA21 system auto-generates a unique CIN and issues the Certificate of Incorporation (COI) digitally. The CIN is embedded in the COI.
CIN Must Appear on All Documents
From this point, the company is legally required to print its CIN on all letterheads, invoices, official correspondence, and MCA filings.

Frequently Asked Questions about CIN
What is CIN (Corporate Identification Number)?
CIN is a 21-character alphanumeric unique identifier assigned by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) to every company registered in India under the Companies Act. It is mandatory for all legal and regulatory filings.
How is a CIN assigned / created?
CIN is automatically generated by the MCA21 system at the time of company incorporation. When you file the SPICe+ form (or older INC-29/INC-7), the ROC processes the application and issues a Certificate of Incorporation that contains the CIN. You cannot manually choose or create a CIN.
Where can I find a company's CIN?
You can find a CIN on the company's Certificate of Incorporation, any official MCA filing, the company's letterhead, invoices, or by searching the MCA21 portal (mca.gov.in) using the company name.
How do I validate a CIN?
A valid CIN is exactly 21 characters: 1 letter (L/U) + 5 digits (NIC code) + 2 letters (state) + 4 digits (year) + 3 letters (company type) + 6 digits (serial). You can verify it on the MCA21 portal or via Paperli.ai's company search.
Is CIN the same as GSTIN or PAN?
No. CIN is issued by MCA for company identity. PAN is issued by the Income Tax Department for tax purposes. GSTIN is issued by GST authorities for goods & services tax. All three are different identifiers.
Can a CIN change?
Yes. If a company changes its listing status (listed ↔ unlisted) or shifts its registered office to a different state, the CIN is updated to reflect the change.
